Das Andreas Reinsch Projekt freut sich, neue Arbeiten von Detlef Günther zu präsentieren. Gezeigt wird Günthers „Mirandola“ Reihe, zusammen mit großformatigen Gemälden des Zyklus „Volume.“ Die Ausstellung findet bis Anfang Januar 2020 statt.
Für seine Arbeiten aus der „Mirandola-Serie“ verwendete Günther Transparentpapier, Acryl und Wachs und trug diese Materialien auf kleine Leinwände auf. Auf diese Weise entstehen Arbeiten mit einer hautähnlichen Struktur. Kleine Unebenheiten sowie die mehrschichtige Oberfläche tragen zu ihrem geheimnisvollen Charakter bei. Das kleine Format, wie auch die transluzent wirkenden Texte und Zeichnungen ziehen den Betrachter zur näheren Betrachtung und Kontemplation an.
Detlef Günther studierte an der Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität in München und der Freien Universität Berlin zunächst Geistes- und Kommunikationswissenschaften und schloss das Studium 1982 mit einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit über „Die Kunstauffassung der Kritischen Theorie“ ab. Von 1984 bis 1990 studierte er Freie Kunst an der HdK Berlin, nachmals UdK mit dem Abschluss als Meisterschüler bei Professor H. J. Diehl. Zur gleichen Zeit gründete er zusammen mit Martin Assig, Klaus Hoefs, Oliver Öfelein und Jochen Stenschke die Künstlergruppe BOR. Als freier Künstler war Günther in den 90er Jahren Mitarbeiter an dem Forschungsprojekt “Technisches Sehen” beim Medieninstitut Berlin (Leitung Prof. Dr. Arthur Engelbert). 1997 gründete er die “Twosuns Media Development GmbH” und entwickelte das interaktive Environment-System “Enclued” in Anbindung an ein neuartiges Kameraverfahren, das Personenbewegungen im Raum dreidimensional aufzeichnet. Beide Innovationen wurden vom Deutschen und Europäischen Patentamt patentiert.
Detlef Günther trat seit Ende der 80er Jahre bisher mit ca. 50 Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Deutschland und im Ausland hervor, z.B. im Haus der Kunst München, Gemeente Museum Helmond (NL), Galerie Kremer-Tengelmann (Köln), NGBK Berlin. Im Auftrag von Unternehmen und Institutionen wie Sony Deutschland, dem Festspielhaus Hellerau, dem HKW, Carsten Nicolai und dem Canon ArtLab in Tokyo realisierte er zudem verschiedene Medienprojekte und -installationen. Seit 2008 hält Detlef Günther Vorträge und Seminare zur Genealogie des Bildes und der bildgebenden Formate in Kunst und Wissenschaft an Fachhochschulen und Universitäten.
Detlef Günthers Arbeiten sind u.a. vertreten in der Sammlung Karl Kremer, in der Kunstsammlung der Deutschen Bank (Frankfurt) und im Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen. Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Die Kuratorin:
Suzy Royal ist unabhängige Kuratorin und Art-Consultant in Berlin. Sie hält ein MA des Courtauld Institute London und ein Doktorat der University of Southern California, Los Angeles, beide in Kunstgeschichte. Ihre weite Erfahrung in der Kunstwelt und des Kunstbetriebs sammelte sie durch Arbeit für das Getty Museum, das Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Auktionshäuser, Universitäten, Galerien und, zuletzt, für die non-profit Stiftung Enter Art Foundation, für die sie erfolgreiche Ausstellungen mit über 300 Künstlern aus der ganzen Welt in Europa und Deutschland kuratierte.

The Andreas Reinsch Project is pleased to exhibit recent artwork by Detlef Günther. He will present work from his ‘Mirandola’ series, as well as large scale paintings from his ‘Volume’ series. The work will be on view until the beginning of January, 2020.
Detlef Günther’s work from his Mirandola series are small, intimate and delicate. He uses transparent paper, acrylic and wax, applying these materials to small canvases which creates tactile works with a skin-like texture. Wrinkles, small imperfections, as well as their multi-layered surfaces, add to their mysterious feel. Their small size, as well as their softly blurred text and drawings draw the viewer in for closer examination and contemplation.
Günther’s paintings and his media work centers on the process of human perception. He believes that perception is a process of interaction. Every thought, every sensory stimulation, generates its own response and creates a new reality. That which is perceived is in a constant state of flux, it’s alteration dependent upon the context, new information and knowledge. At the same time, the object under scrutiny is transformed by the amount of attention paid to it.

He studied free art at the UdK in Berlin from 1984 – 1990 (MA), eventually completing his Meisterschüler degree with Professor H.J. Diehl. Since the late 1980s Günther has participated in about 50 solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Spain. His exhibitions have taken place at the Haus der Kunst, Munich, Gemeente Museum, the Netherlands, Galerie Kremer-Tengelmann, Cologne/Gelsenkirchen and the NGBK in Berlin, to name a few. Günther’s works are represented in the Karl Kremer Collection (Gelsenkirchen), the Deutsche Bank Collection (Frankfurt) and the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen, among others.

About the Curator:
Suzy Royal is an independent curator and art consultant based in Berlin. She holds an MA from the Courtauld Institute in London and a Phd from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, both in art history.
With her international experience in museums such as the Getty Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, auction houses, academia, galleries, as well as a non-profit art foundation, she has a deep understanding of the art world and the industry behind it.
Most recently, in collaboration with the Berlin-based Enter Art Foundation, she curated numerous successful exhibitions, in Germany and Europe, scouting and exhibiting over 300 emerging and mid-career artists from all over the world.
